Ömer Yurtseven is a young Turkish basketball player who has reached the heights every basketball player wants to go to: the NBA. But today’s Gladiator of the Miami Heat not only wants to reach higher but also deeper. Because Ömer is a doer.
A cause-to-cause player. He is the creator and promoter of Swish for Change. And that is why he is also a leader of change in The Ocean Connections, the first community of story-doers in action for the world’s oceans.
Off the court, after leaving everything in the game, Ömer finds an even bigger challenge: taking care of the planet for us and for those who come after. How? By transforming abandoned fishing nets into nets for the courts where thousands of young people play basketball every day.
Now Ömer takes the ball to start the play, makes eye contact with you and gives you the pass, for you to be part of the cause and the team. A team that seeks to win the game of Sustainability.

Every day millions of tons of garbage are dumped into the oceans and rivers around the world. But the material that does the most damage, the one that pollutes the waters the most, the one that sickens marine life the most, is plastic.

The UN estimates that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
Among all the types of waste that are left in the ocean, we discovered one that gave birth to this cause. Abandoned fishing nets. Reconditioned nets can once again have a life and a place on earth, saving marine life.

What we are doing at Swish for Change is ultimately inspiring change. Connecting what we do every day with a larger environment. Expanding the limit of our action on the things that matter to us.
What does a fishing net have in common with a basketball net? Absolutely everything, because both are networks. The exception is a net in the ocean pollutes and endangers marine life and a net on a field challenges. Scoring this point will be the first in a long game. But it is the point at which the game begins. And we are all invited to play.

Once we understood every part of the problem, we went in search of partners to join the cause. Thus, we allied with Ecoballution, a company that promotes the collection and transformation of fishing nets from the oceans into basketball nets. Ecoballution is a company that teamed with the maker of basketball nets which are handmade by the women weavers of the Redeiras Illa Da Estrela association. And so, not only do we avoid marine waste, but we also add value to the artisanal work of the women who give life to their tradition.
Your donation sets in motion and breathes life into this action. Thanks to your contribution, the Foundation for Sustainable Consumption Inc., <which aims to generate behavioral changes in consumers towards more sustainable habits>, will educate and train fishermen, both in the moment of removing fishing nets in waste conditions, and in recovering those fishing nets before they end up in the oceans; transforming them into basketball nets working hand in hand with Ecoballution. And thus, continue communicating and educating about the problem of “ghost nets” in the oceans.
